David Eyes Title Fightback at France’s Paul Ricard
Sri Lankan star, now 18, returns to action aiming to reclaim Euroformula lead
Yevan David heads into this weekend’s Euroformula Open round at Paul Ricard (July 18–20) focused on a return to winning form — and the top of the points table — as the championship enters its second half at the iconic French circuit.
The Sri Lankan talent, who celebrated his 18th birthday last week, arrives just four points adrift of Motopark team-mate Michael Shin in the overall standings after a spirited recovery weekend at the Hungaroring two weeks ago.
Despite a qualifying penalty and technical issues, David secured his eighth podium of the season in Budapest and delivered strong points across all three races.
As the summer break looms - with the subsequent event not until the first week of September - the Paul Ricard weekend offers a critical opportunity for David to reassert his title ambitions.
“Paul Ricard is a very interesting track — high-speed corners, long straights, and a big slipstream effect, which makes for great racing. We've executed well over the past few rounds and even when we've been unlucky, we’ve controlled what we can. This is a track I raced at in F4, so to return in a faster car is something I’m really excited about. The setup compromise between downforce and top speed is a challenge, but I think we’ll see some cool action this weekend.”
The 5.842km circuit near Toulon is known for its mix of sweeping high-speed sections and long straights. A famed test venue and location for the most recent French Grands Prix, the track has overtaking opportunities and close slipstream battles guaranteed; all signs point to another dramatic weekend in what has become a tightly contested championship.
David, who has claimed four wins in his rookie Euroformula season, remains the highest-ranked newcomer and leads the Rookie classification outright as well as being just four points off the title lead he held until the most recent round.
“This weekend is all about putting everything together. We know we’ve got the pace, and with clean execution we can get back to the front.”
This weekend’s Euroformula Open action at Paul Ricard starts with practice on Friday, with qualifying and race one on Saturday and then two further races on Sunday.
Yevan David is supported in his 2025 Euroformula Open campaign by Merc Stop, Alcom, Dayholi and the Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC). He is contesting his first full season in the ultra-competitive single-seater championship, where all drivers do battle in identical Dallara 324 chassis powered by TOM’S engines.
