David Targets Strong Restart in Euroformula Open Title Fight
Sri Lankan contender returns from summer break eyeing redemption at the Red Bull Ring
Yevan David resumes his rookie Euroformula Open campaign this weekend at Austria’s Red Bull Ring (September 5–7) – location of the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix - as the title battle tightens for the final stretch of the 2025 season.
The Motopark driver sits second in the standings after a dramatic Paul Ricard weekend in July that saw him briefly reclaim the championship lead before being caught up in a rival’s mistake. With just 37 points covering the top four drivers, the Sri Lankan teenager remains firmly in contention with nine races still to run.
David, 18, who has taken four victories and a pole position in his maiden Euroformula Open season, was recently announced as a competitor in the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Championship and also used the summer break to stay sharp by contesting Silverstone GB3 round in the UK, ensuring he arrives in Styria fully race-ready.
“I’ve had one test, but I’ve never raced at the Red Bull Ring before. It’s going to be interesting to learn how to race on a new track, but it’s a very cool circuit with a lot of elevation and some heavy braking zones, so overtaking is definitely possible.”
The 4.326km circuit, nestled in the Styrian hills, is one of the most spectacular venues on the calendar, combining long straights, tight uphill hairpins, and fast flowing corners. The layout demands precision and rewards drivers who can adapt quickly to changing grip levels — especially with the potential for mixed weather in the Austrian mountains.
“I’m heading into the second half of the season feeling very refreshed. Red Bull Ring is a very interesting track. It's not the easiest to race on, because there's a lot of dirty air in sector two and sector three, but there is a lot of opportunity because of the reverse grids.”
David currently trails championship leader Tymek Kucharczyk by 17 points, while holding a slender advantage over Motopark team-mate Michael Shin. Fellow title contender Jose Garfias, a winner at the last three events, remains within striking distance.
“The dirty air in these cars is quite strong, so that will make racing tricky, but as we’ve said all year, the key is to nail qualifying, execute in every race, and score as many points as possible. Sometimes that means not taking big risks, because it’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
This weekend’s Euroformula Open round at the Red Bull Ring begins with practice on Friday, followed by qualifying and Race 1 on Saturday, with two further races on Sunday.
Yevan David’s 2025 Euroformula Open campaign is supported by Merc Stop, Alcom, Dayholi, and the Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC). He is contesting his first full season in the ultra-competitive single-seater championship, which features identical Dallara 324 chassis powered by TOM’S engines.
