Yevan David hoping to stun in Spa

Sri Lankan teen sensation leads Euroformula Open heading to Belgium

17-year-old Sri Lankan racing driver Yevan David will arrive at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit this weekend as the championship leader of the 2025 Euroformula Open after a stellar debut round last month in Portugal.

David, who became the first Sri Lankan to win in an international single-seater series last year, took two victories and a podium in Portimao to open his full-season campaign in dominant fashion with German powerhouse Motopark.

Now the grid heads to the Ardennes Forest for the second round of the season — a triple-header at Spa, one of the most revered circuits in global motorsport, famed for Eau Rouge, Raidillon and its unpredictable conditions.

“I’m excited for Spa,” said David. “It’s a place every driver dreams of racing at. We had a great weekend in Portimao, but Spa is a whole new challenge — faster, longer, and more demanding. I’ve done my homework, and I’m coming in confident but focused.”

“Spa is a very interesting track,” David elaborates. “It's one of my favourites on the calendar. It's the longest one as well, meaning there's only around 12 to 13 laps in the races.

“There are a lot of interesting corners, like turn one, La Source Eau Rouge, the Bus Stop, chicane, and, of course, the high-speed Pouhon. There's a lot of racing that can happen because there's heavy braking zones, long straights and many opportunities.

“I'm really looking forward to driving it in the new Euro Formula car. It's going to be very exciting. And I can't wait for the second round of the Euro Formula championship to be underway.”

David’s commanding performance in Portugal has made him one to watch in Euroformula Open, a key proving ground for rising stars in identical Dallara 324 cars powered by TOM’S engines — where talent and teamwork make the difference.

“We learnt a lot in Round 1,” added David. “The team and I gelled quickly, and we know we’ll have to keep pushing as the competition steps up. Spa’s long straights and high-speed corners will be another big test — mentally and physically.”

As well as his own racing, David kept a close eye on last weekend’s World Endurance Championship at the same circuit.

“I watched the WEC race at Spa closely,” he explained. “The Ferrari’s double overtake at the Bus Stop and all the battles through traffic really showed how much you can learn about track position and strategy. Watching endurance cars fight it out there gave me fresh perspective ahead of racing at Spa myself this weekend.”

David has been preparing for the weekend with simulator sessions and training to build on the momentum of his Portimao breakthrough.

“It’s been a huge boost to have such amazing support after the first round — from the team, from Sri Lanka, and from motorsport fans everywhere. I want to keep representing my country proudly and prove we belong at this level.”

David’s 2025 Euroformula campaign is supported by Merc Stop, Alcom, Dayholi and the Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC).
