Yevan David primed for Portimao Euroformula Open season-start

Sri Lankan rising star ready to race in Algarve

17-year-old Sri Lankan driver Yevan David will make his Euroformula Open season-start this weekend at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve near Portimao, where a field of hot young talent will do  battle against the backdrop of the challenging undulating venue of the Portuguese Grand Prix in Euroformula Open’s latest cars.

The 2025 Euroformula Open season-opener - the first of an eight-event season - will see David and his rivals line-up in Dallara 324 chassis powered by Tom’s engines for three races across the weekend on the 4.65km track.

David will race for the Motopark squad, a key player in Euroformula Open, with the series a key step on the international single-seater ladder, with the identical chassis and engines meaning a level-playing field where talent can prevail.

A proven talent in karting before graduating to single-seaters, David starts his first full season of Euroformula following a strong 2024 where a late entry to the final Euroformula Open round of the 2024 season saw victories at Monza on his debut to see David become the first-ever driver from Sri Lanka to win a race in an international single-seater series.

“2025 is a huge opportunity for me,” said David. “To be joining a team like Motopark — with its history of developing drivers all the way to Formula 1 — is a big honour. I’ve worked hard to get here, and I’m proud to represent Sri Lanka on a stage like this.”

Teams and drivers expect a steep learning-curve for the season ahead, with testing with the new cars having only commenced in February.

“It has been a steep learning curve with the new car and everyone faces the same challenge,” explained David. “Our preparations have gone well, but we won’t really know the level of competition until we’re out on track.”

As well as pre-season testing, David spent the winter training in Sri Lanka, doing Sim work at Motopark’s Oschersleben HQ in Germany and even attended the Jeddah E-Prix in Saudi Arabia as a guest of the Mahindra Formula E team.

“It’s been a busy off-season,” said Yevan. “I have been fortunate to spend quality time in Sri Lanka and the home support and interest following my Euroformula wins last year was incredible.”

David is supported in his journey by Merc Stop, Alcom and Dayholi as well as Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC).

“I know I’m up against more experienced drivers, but I’m here to learn, evolve, and show that I belong,” said David. “Representing my country in international motorsport is something I take seriously — this isn’t just about me, it’s about what’s possible for young Sri Lankans who dream of racing at the top.”

The 2025 Euroformula Open calendar spans eight iconic European circuits including Spa-Francorchamps, the Hungaroring and Monza — each one offering David a chance to develop his racecraft and build a profile as Sri Lanka’s brightest young racing hope.

Motopark Team Principal Timo Rumpfkeil is optimistic about David’s chances: “Yevan has adapted well in testing, and we believe he has the potential to make an immediate impact. The first round will be a great opportunity for him to gain experience in race conditions, and we are confident in his ability to deliver strong performances throughout the season.”
